Our first impression of HostGator wasn't entirely impressive. However, as we peeled away the layers to discover all that HostGator has to offer, we found a nice little company.
Signup Signup was quick, straight forward and easy. 10 minutes after signing up, we recevied our cPanel login and instructions on updating our domain name to point to our newly created hosting account. The boilerplate email we received could have been spruced up with graphics and such, which would have improved the signup experience. Support We haven't experienced any trouble with our account, however we did put the support department through their paces - which included calling them at 1:30 in the morning to say 'hi'. At this late hour, we were able to reach support via email, live chat as well as phone. In addition to HostGator's live support, they have a wealth of helpful information available to help customers, including nearly 300 tips in their knowledgebase and more than 80 Flash tutorials. Features Though not as nicely integrated with our account as GoDaddy, HostMonster does have a wealth of additional add ons available; some free, some at a reasonable cost. Some of the add ons available include Site Builder, Hosting Templates (see thumbnail), SiteStudio, ASP and SSH access - all available for free. Our one qualm with add ons and upgrades is that their dedicated server upgrade pricing was quite high. Experience The signup experience, though expedient, could have provided a little more direction on accessing our account. That being said, HostGator has done an excellent job at creating a community around their company with their blog (see thumbnail) and forums. HostGator is planning the launch of "Project Gator", which "...will evolve into an integrated billing, affiliate, chat, and ticket system." according to HostGator management. Our feeling is that his (and some work on the signup process) would complete HostGator's offering nicely. PROs: -Tons of Tutorials -Great Price -Nice Community and Good Client Communication -Fast Setup -24/7 Phone support CONs: -Billing, Support and Account information control panels are not integrated -Dedicated Server pricing and upgrades leaves something to be desired |
